Formula and methodology
Formula: Base energy = people × days × planning energy; buffered energy = base energy × (1 + buffer/100); packages = ceil(buffered energy / energy per package).
This is an inventory arithmetic tool, not a diet plan. It converts a household, a duration, and a package label into a reserve count while leaving the daily planning value visible for the user to replace with an appropriate household or official preparedness plan.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- People — people; minimum 1; maximum 100000
- Reserve duration — days; minimum 1; maximum 3650
- Planning energy per person per day — kcal/person/day; minimum 1; maximum 100000
- Reserve buffer — %; minimum 0; maximum 500
- Energy per package or meal — kcal/package; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| People | 4 |
| Reserve duration | 7 |
| Planning energy per person per day | 2000 |
| Reserve buffer | 10 |
| Energy per package or meal | 500 |
Base energy = 56,000 kcal; buffered reserve = 61,600 kcal; plan for 124 packages.
Assumptions and limits
- The entered energy value is a planning input and does not prescribe an individual’s nutrition, medical, pregnancy, child, or activity needs.
- Every package is treated as having the same entered energy value; real supplies may contain mixed labels and preparation losses.
- The buffer is applied to total energy before packages are rounded upward.
- The result does not plan water, medication, refrigeration, cooking fuel, allergies, cultural food preferences, or shelf life.
- Use sealed, suitable, in-date foods and follow current local emergency-management and food-safety guidance.
- A long reserve should be reviewed when household size, diet, storage conditions, or official guidance changes.
