Formula and methodology
Formula: Hypotenuse c = sqrt(a^2 + b^2); missing leg a = sqrt(c^2 - b^2); area = ab/2.
In a right triangle, the square of the longest side equals the sum of the squares of the two perpendicular legs. Select which side is unknown before entering values. For a missing leg, the first supplied length must be the hypotenuse and strictly longer than the second length.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Missing side — 2 choices
- First known length — units; A leg when solving for the hypotenuse; otherwise the hypotenuse.; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Second known length (leg) — units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Missing side | hypotenuse |
| First known length | 3 |
| Second known length (leg) | 4 |
5 units
Assumptions and limits
- The triangle has a 90-degree angle.
- Known sides must be positive and use the same length unit.
- Degenerate triangles, including a leg of zero length, are rejected.
