Formula and methodology
Formula: Hydraulic horsepower = Q·H·SG ÷ 3960; pump brake horsepower = hydraulic horsepower ÷ efficiency.
Pump horsepower depends on how much fluid is moved, how much head the pump supplies, the fluid’s specific gravity, and how efficiently the pump converts shaft input into hydraulic output. The estimate is useful for pump selection discussions, but the motor and drive must also be checked against real operating conditions.
