Formula and methodology
Formula: Ideal effort = load/supporting strands; actual effort = ideal effort/(efficiency/100); rope travel = supporting strands×load rise.
Each supporting strand shares the ideal load, while real friction and bending losses increase the effort. The rope must move farther than the load in proportion to the ideal mechanical advantage.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Load force — N; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Supporting rope strands — minimum 1; maximum 1000000
- Overall efficiency — %; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
- Load rise — m; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Load force | 1000 |
| Supporting rope strands | 4 |
| Overall efficiency | 85 |
| Load rise | 0.5 |
Ideal effort = 250 N; efficiency-adjusted effort ≈ 294.12 N; rope travel = 2 m.
Assumptions and limits
- The entered strand count is the number of rope sections supporting the moving load.
- Efficiency is an overall supplied estimate and applies to the ideal force advantage.
- Rope mass, pulley inertia, acceleration, anchoring, and safety factors are not modeled.
