Formula and methodology
Formula: One-way propagation delay = distance ÷ signal speed; round-trip delay = 2 × one-way delay.
Propagation delay is the time a signal takes to travel through the physical path. Distance and propagation speed determine this fixed component; serialization, queuing, processing, routing, and retransmission delays are separate effects.

Assumptions and limits
- Distance is the actual path length, not merely a straight-line map distance.
- Signal speed is entered for the medium; fiber is slower than vacuum and different cable or radio paths have different effective speeds.
- The result is a physical propagation estimate and is not a complete measurement of application latency or internet round-trip time.
