Formula and methodology
Formula: A whole number n greater than 1 is prime when it has no factor from 2 through floor(sqrt(n)).
The bounded trial-division test checks the possible factors needed to classify the entered integer and reports the first factor found for a composite value.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Whole number — minimum 2; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Whole number | 97 |
97 is prime; its smallest factor is 97.
Assumptions and limits
- The input is an integer at least 2 and within the supported safe range.
- This is a deterministic trial-division test, not a probabilistic certificate.
- The result does not factor a composite number completely.
