Formula and methodology
Formula: P/S ratio = share price ÷ sales per share; market capitalization = share price × shares outstanding; represented sales = sales per share × shares outstanding.
The calculator compares the entered market price with the entered sales generated per share, then shows the same relationship at the total-share scale. Sales are not profit, cash flow, or a valuation conclusion; the result is a multiple for a stated reporting period.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Share price — currency units per share; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Sales per share — currency units per share; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Shares outstanding — shares; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Share price | 45 |
| Sales per share | 15 |
| Shares outstanding | 2000000 |
P/S = 3.00×; market capitalization = 90,000,000 currency units; represented sales = 30,000,000 currency units.
Assumptions and limits
- Share price and sales per share refer to the same share basis and reporting period.
- Sales per share is supplied by the visitor and is positive so the ratio is defined.
- Shares outstanding are treated as a simple scaling count without dilution or treasury-share adjustments.
- The result uses reported sales rather than gross margin, earnings, or free cash flow.
- The multiple is not comparable across firms without checking accounting policies, periods, growth, and industry structure.
- Taxes, forecasts, risk, currency conversion, and investment suitability are not modeled.
