Formula and methodology
Formula: P/B ratio = share price ÷ book value per share; market capitalization = share price × shares outstanding; represented book equity = book value per share × shares outstanding.
This calculator keeps the per-share market price and per-share accounting book value on the same share basis, then scales both by the entered share count. It reports a transparent ratio and does not decide whether a company is cheap, expensive, investable, or comparable to another company.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Share price — currency units per share; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Book value per share — currency units per share; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Shares outstanding — shares; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Share price | 120 |
| Book value per share | 60 |
| Shares outstanding | 1000000 |
P/B = 2.00×; market capitalization = 120,000,000 currency units; represented book equity = 60,000,000 currency units.
Assumptions and limits
- Share price and book value per share use the same currency and share class basis.
- Book value per share is a supplied accounting input rather than a balance-sheet reconstruction.
- Shares outstanding are entered as a count and are used only to scale the two per-share values.
- The ratio is mathematical and does not adjust for intangibles, preferred equity, treasury shares, dilution, or market conventions.
- A positive book value per share is required so the multiple remains defined.
- Taxes, forecasts, risk, sector differences, and investment suitability are not modeled.
