Formula and methodology
Formula: M = ppm by mass x solution density / (1000 x solute molar mass); mass concentration = ppm by mass x solution density in mg/L.
A mass-based ppm value becomes a mass concentration only after the solution density is applied. The resulting mg/L value is then divided by the solute molar mass to obtain molarity, so ppm and mg/L are equal only for a density of 1 g/mL.

Assumptions and limits
- ppm is a mass fraction expressed as mg solute per kg solution, density is in g/mL, and molar mass is in g/mol.
- The solution density is treated as an entered constant and the dilute conversion uses 1 L = 1000 mL.
- ppm is not identified with mg/L unless the entered solution density is exactly 1 g/mL; activity, temperature, and volume change are not modeled.
