Formula and methodology
Formula: |P(S)| = 2ⁿ for a finite set S with n distinct elements; the empty set and S itself are included.
Each element has two independent choices in a subset: included or excluded. Listing all binary choices produces the power set, including the empty subset and the original set.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Set elements — Enter 1 to 12 comma-separated elements; duplicates are removed.
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Set elements | red, blue, green |
8 subsets, from ∅ through {red, blue, green}
Assumptions and limits
- Elements are entered as comma-separated labels and compared after trimming whitespace.
- The input is limited to 12 distinct elements so the complete list remains readable.
- Two labels with different spelling or case are treated as different elements.
