Formula and methodology
Formula: Required pure salt mass in kg = max(0, target ppm − current ppm) × water litres ÷ 1,000,000; product mass = pure salt mass ÷ purity fraction.
A concentration difference in milligrams per litre can be converted directly into a mass when the water volume is known. The planner shows the pure-salt requirement and adjusts for the entered product purity; it does not choose a species, cell, or local operating target.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Pool water volume — selected volume unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Volume unit — 3 choices
- Current salt concentration — ppm; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Target salt concentration — ppm; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Salt product purity — %; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Pool water volume | 50000 |
| Volume unit | L |
| Current salt concentration | 0 |
| Target salt concentration | 3000 |
| Salt product purity | 99 |
Pure salt required =150 kg; at 99% purity, product planning mass ≈151.515 kg.
Assumptions and limits
- The pool is treated as a uniformly mixed volume and the entered concentration values are in milligrams per litre equivalent ppm.
- One ppm is treated as one milligram per litre for this water-planning arithmetic.
- Only a positive increase is added; if the current concentration is already at or above the target, the required addition is zero.
- Product purity is entered as a percentage and the calculated product mass is larger than the pure-salt mass when purity is below 100 percent.
- Evaporation, splash-out, dilution, chemical interactions, test error, and circulation time are not modeled.
- The target concentration must come from the equipment maker, water professional, and local safety instructions rather than from this page.
- Additions should be staged and re-tested according to the product label; never mix incompatible chemicals.
- The calculator does not determine whether a pool is safe to swim in or compliant with a local rule.
