Formula and methodology
Formula: Water volume = length×width×average depth; liner dimensions = (length+2(depth+overlap)) by (width+2(depth+overlap)); liner area = those dimensions multiplied; order area = liner area×(1+waste/100).
The water result uses an average depth, while the liner estimate adds the depth and edge overlap on every side. This makes the distinction visible for a simple rectangular pond; irregular shelves, sloped sides, folds, plumbing, and filtration must be measured separately.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Pond length — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Pond width — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Average water depth — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Liner edge overlap per side — m; minimum 0; maximum 100000
- Extra liner allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Pond length | 8 |
| Pond width | 4 |
| Average water depth | 1.2 |
| Liner edge overlap per side | 0.6 |
| Extra liner allowance | 10 |
Average water volume is 38.4 m³ or 38,400 L; the simple liner footprint is 11.6 m by 7.6 m, or 88.16 m² before allowance and 96.976 m² after 10%.
Assumptions and limits
- The plan footprint is rectangular and average depth is used for a first-pass water volume rather than the maximum depth.
- The same vertical depth and edge overlap are available on all four sides for the simple liner rectangle.
- Sloping shelves, irregular banks, underlay, seams, drains, pumps, evaporation, water treatment, structural support, and local safety requirements are not modeled.
