Formula and methodology
Formula: Project area = L×W; net sheets = project area ÷ sheet area; sheets to order = ceil(net sheets×(1+waste)).
This is a coverage and ordering estimate: it compares a rectangular project area with the actual sheet dimensions entered, then applies a visible allowance and rounds up. Plywood selection itself is a separate technical decision involving grade, thickness, span rating, exposure, support spacing, fastening, and local code requirements.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Project length — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000000
- Project width — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000000
- Sheet length — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000
- Sheet width — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000
- Waste and cutting allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Project length | 4 |
| Project width | 8 |
| Sheet length | 1.2192 |
| Sheet width | 2.4384 |
| Waste and cutting allowance | 10 |
A 4 m × 8 m area needs 11 sheets before the 10% allowance and 12 sheets after rounding with that allowance.
Assumptions and limits
- The project and sheets are represented as rectangles and the entered dimensions use the same unit.
- The allowance is a planning percentage for cuts, layout, and damage; it does not optimize a cutting diagram.
- The result does not select a plywood grade, thickness, structural rating, orientation, support spacing, or installation method.
