Formula and methodology
Formula: Horizontal PPI = horizontal pixels/physical width; vertical PPI = vertical pixels/physical height; diagonal PPI = diagonal pixels/diagonal size.
The three density results distinguish axis-specific density from the common diagonal-density convention.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Horizontal pixels — minimum 1; maximum 1000000000
- Vertical pixels — minimum 1; maximum 1000000000
- Physical width — in; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Physical height — in; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Horizontal pixels | 1920 |
| Vertical pixels | 1080 |
| Physical width | 20 |
| Physical height | 11.25 |
Horizontal and vertical density = 96 PPI; diagonal density = 96 PPI.
Assumptions and limits
- Pixel counts are positive whole numbers and physical dimensions are positive inches.
- Pixels map uniformly to the stated physical rectangle.
- Subpixel layouts, viewing distance, scaling settings, and perceived sharpness are not modeled.
