Formula and methodology
Formula: Pitch diameter D = teeth/diametral pitch; circular pitch p = π/diametral pitch; module m = 25.4/diametral pitch; angular tooth pitch = 360°/teeth.
Diametral pitch relates tooth count to pitch-circle diameter. The calculator returns the diameter and two common tooth-size descriptions so a visitor can compare a gear specification without mixing the inch-based diametral-pitch convention with metric module.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Number of teeth — teeth; minimum 1; maximum 1000000
- Diametral pitch — teeth/in; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Number of teeth | 40 |
| Diametral pitch | 8 |
A 40-tooth gear at 8 teeth/in has a 5 in pitch diameter, a circular pitch of about 0.3927 in, and a module of 3.175 mm.
Assumptions and limits
- The entered diametral pitch is the transverse diametral pitch in teeth per inch.
- The gear is represented by its pitch circle; tooth profile, pressure angle, helix angle, backlash, and interference are not modeled.
- Module is reported in millimetres using 25.4 mm per inch.
- Matching gears still require compatible pitch and a full design check.
