Formula and methodology
Formula: Mat outer width = artwork width + left border + right border; mat outer height = artwork height + top border + bottom border; frame outer dimensions add twice the frame reveal; mat area = mat outer area − artwork area; frame perimeter = 2(frame width + frame height).
The calculator keeps the artwork, mat opening, and frame boundary as separate rectangles. Unequal top and bottom borders are allowed, which makes a weighted lower border possible without hiding the measurement. The frame reveal is the extra border outside the mat; it is a planning dimension, not a claim about a particular moulding profile or glazing rebate.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Artwork width — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Artwork height — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Mat border — left — length units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Mat border — right — length units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Mat border — top — length units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Mat border — bottom — length units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Frame reveal beyond mat — length units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Artwork width | 20 |
| Artwork height | 25 |
| Mat border — left | 5 |
| Mat border — right | 5 |
| Mat border — top | 5 |
| Mat border — bottom | 7 |
| Frame reveal beyond mat | 2 |
The mat outer size is 30 × 37; the frame outer size is 34 × 41; mat area is 610 square units and frame perimeter is 150 length units.
Assumptions and limits
- Artwork and border measurements use compatible length units and describe aligned rectangles.
- The artwork dimensions are treated as the visible opening size; mounting overlap, bleed, and glazing clearance are not inferred.
- Mat area is the rectangular material area between the artwork rectangle and the mat outer rectangle.
- Frame reveal is applied equally on all four sides outside the mat outer dimensions.
- Corners, mitres, rabbet depth, backing thickness, glazing, hardware, and cutting waste are excluded.
- Measure the actual artwork and selected moulding before cutting; a frame shop or conservation professional may require different clearances.
- The result is geometry and material planning, not archival or structural approval.
