Formula and methodology
Formula: Kmax = hc/lambda - phi, where photon energy and work function are expressed in the same energy unit.
The photoelectric equation subtracts a material's work function from incident photon energy. A positive result indicates energy remains for the emitted electron in the idealized model.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Incident wavelength — nm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Material work function — eV; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Incident wavelength | 400 |
| Material work function | 2 |
Maximum kinetic energy is about 1.10 eV.
Assumptions and limits
- Wavelength is a vacuum wavelength in nanometres and the work function is in electron-volts.
- The material is represented by one work-function value.
- Surface condition, contact potentials, detector response, and electron energy distributions are not modeled.
