Formula and methodology
Formula: COP = useful output energy ÷ supplied input energy; input per output = 1/COP.
The coefficient of performance is a dimensionless ratio of useful heating or cooling delivered to the energy supplied to operate the system. The same ratio structure works in either mode, but the useful output must be defined consistently with the test or scenario. A COP above one is possible for a heat pump because the system moves heat rather than turning all input energy directly into heat at the output.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Useful heating or cooling output — kWh; minimum 1.0E-9; maximum 1.0E+15
- Input energy — kWh; minimum 1.0E-9; maximum 1.0E+15
- System mode — 2 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Useful heating or cooling output | 12 |
| Input energy | 3 |
| System mode | heating |
Heating COP = 4.0; input energy is 0.25 kWh per kWh of useful output.
Assumptions and limits
- Output and input are measured over the same interval and use the same energy unit.
- The result is a point or scenario COP, not a seasonal efficiency rating and not a guarantee under changing outdoor conditions.
- Standby losses, auxiliary heaters, fan and pump boundaries, and test-method definitions are included only if the supplied input and output measurements include them.
