Formula and methodology
Formula: Absolute error = |measured − reference|; percent error = absolute error / |reference| × 100.
Percent error describes the size of a measurement's difference from a reference. Signed percent error preserves whether the measurement is above or below the reference.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Measured value — minimum -1000000000000000; maximum 1000000000000000
- Reference value — The reference value must not be zero.; minimum -1000000000000000; maximum 1000000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Measured value | 98.4 |
| Reference value | 100 |
Absolute error = 1.6; percent error = 1.6%; signed percent error = −1.6%.
Assumptions and limits
- The reference value is the accepted or theoretical comparison value.
- Percent error is not the same as percent difference between two equally authoritative measurements.
