Formula and methodology
Formula: PDE = R h c / [e λ G (1 + PXT)(1 + PAP)], where h is Planck's constant, c is light speed, e is elementary charge, and λ is wavelength in metres.
The calculator converts an optical responsivity measurement into a photon-detection probability under a stated SiPM gain and correction model. Crosstalk and afterpulsing inflate the measured signal, so they are shown as separate inputs rather than silently treating all output charge as primary photon detections.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- SiPM gain — electrons per detected event; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Afterpulsing probability — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Optical crosstalk probability — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Incident wavelength — nm; minimum 1; maximum 1000000
- Measured responsivity — A/W; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| SiPM gain | 1000000 |
| Afterpulsing probability | 10 |
| Optical crosstalk probability | 10 |
| Incident wavelength | 450 |
| Measured responsivity | 80000 |
The entered measurement model gives a PDE of about 18.21%.
Assumptions and limits
- Responsivity is expressed in amperes per watt for the same wavelength and measurement condition as the other inputs.
- Gain is a dimensionless charge multiplication factor and the wavelength is converted from nanometres to metres.
- Crosstalk and afterpulsing probabilities are entered as fractions of the primary event and are applied as multiplicative correction terms.
- The equation is a first-pass measurement model; correlated noise, dark current, saturation, recovery time, spectral response variation, and instrument calibration are not added.
- A result above 100% is rejected as an inconsistent input combination rather than clipped into a plausible-looking percentage.
- This is an optics and detector calculation, not a device qualification, radiation-safety assessment, or medical-imaging performance guarantee.
