Formula and methodology
Formula: A = [I/(kΔT^0.44)]^(1/0.725) in mil²; width = A/copper thickness after unit conversion, using k = 0.048 external or 0.024 internal.
This is the inverse planning companion to the trace-current estimate. It produces a first-pass width from the current target, copper thickness, layer choice, and thermal allowance, then leaves the final decision to the applicable board standard and thermal design review.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Trace location — 2 choices
- Target current — A; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Copper thickness — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Allowed temperature rise — °C; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Trace location | external |
| Target current | 2 |
| Copper thickness | 0.035 |
| Allowed temperature rise | 10 |
Estimated copper area ≈ 0.02735 mm² and width ≈ 0.781 mm for the stated simplified external-layer relation.
Assumptions and limits
- Width and thickness are displayed in millimetres, while the empirical cross-sectional area is evaluated in square mils before conversion back to millimetres.
- The external/internal constants are a simplified legacy relation and do not guarantee compliance or reliability.
- Copper planes, neighboring traces, vias, pulsed loads, airflow, ambient temperature, and fabrication tolerances are not modeled.
