Formula and methodology
Formula: Area = length × width; base volume = area × base depth; sand volume = area × sand depth × (1 + waste/100); sand mass = sand volume × density.
The calculator keeps the structural base layer and the thin bedding layer separate, because they are different material quantities even when they cover the same area.

Assumptions and limits
