Formula and methodology
Formula: With repetition, count = Aᴸ; without repetition, count = A!/(A−L)! when L≤A, where A is alphabet size and L is length.
The size of a password space is a counting result, not a prediction that every possible string is equally likely in real use. When repetition is allowed, every position has A choices. When repetition is forbidden, each filled position removes one choice from the remaining pool. The exact integer is shown without rounding, together with its decimal digit count and an approximate base-two size for comparing search spaces.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Available characters — Count every allowed symbol once; for example, 26 letters plus 10 digits plus 26 case variants gives 62.; minimum 2; maximum 1000
- Password length — minimum 1; maximum 200
- May a character repeat? — 2 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Available characters | 62 |
| Password length | 12 |
| May a character repeat? | yes |
62¹² = 3,226,266,762,397,899,821,056 possible strings, an approximately 71.45-bit search space.
Assumptions and limits
- Every allowed character is treated as distinct and available at every position unless repetition is disabled.
- The alphabet size includes only symbols that the actual system accepts; whitespace, normalization, and locale rules are not inferred.
- The password length is an exact count of character positions.
- The calculation counts possible strings and does not model human choice, leaked passwords, rate limits, hashing, salting, or authentication policy.
- Without repetition, the requested length cannot exceed the alphabet size.
- The result is an upper-bound counting model and is not a security audit.
