Formula and methodology
Formula: Entry at row n and position k=C(n,k)=n!/(k!(n−k)!); the sum of every row is 2^n.
Pascal's triangle is a compact display of binomial coefficients. The first entry in row n has position zero, and each interior entry can also be formed by adding the two entries above it. This page uses exact integer arithmetic for the coefficient and row sum so a large answer is not silently rounded into a misleading decimal.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Row n (top row is 0) — minimum 0; maximum 200
- Position k (left entry is 0) — minimum 0; maximum 200
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Row n (top row is 0) | 5 |
| Position k (left entry is 0) | 2 |
C(5,2) = 10; row sum = 32; the selected entry is the 3rd item in row 5.
Assumptions and limits
- Row and position are whole numbers with 0 ≤ k ≤ n and the top row is numbered zero.
- The coefficient is the standard binomial count for selecting k positions from n without regard to order.
- The exact text result is intentional because coefficients grow beyond the safe integer range quickly.
- The page does not construct a visual triangle, expand a polynomial, or interpret a coefficient as a probability without a separately supplied experiment.
