Formula and methodology
Formula: Sheet area = width in metres × height in metres; sheet mass = grammage × sheet area; total mass = sheet mass × sheet count; ream mass = sheet mass × 500.
Grammage is mass per square metre, so the calculation uses the physical sheet area rather than treating a paper label such as a pound rating as universal. This makes the result usable with metric paper sizes worldwide. It reports mass only; basis-weight labels depend on the paper category and base size, so no hidden category conversion is invented.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Grammage — g/m²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Sheet width — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Sheet height — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Sheet count — sheets; minimum 1; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Grammage | 80 |
| Sheet width | 210 |
| Sheet height | 297 |
| Sheet count | 500 |
An A4 80 g/m² sheet has area 0.06237 m² and mass about 4.9896 g; 500 sheets weigh about 2.4948 kg.
Assumptions and limits
- Grammage is supplied in grams per square metre and dimensions are outside sheet dimensions measured in millimetres.
- Every sheet has the same grammage and rectangular dimensions.
- A ream is reported as 500 sheets for comparison; a supplier may package a different count.
- Trim, moisture, coatings, ink, packaging, cores, and pallet materials are not included.
- The mass result is not a postal billable weight, which may use packaging, dimensional rules, or carrier rounding.
- Paper category, basis size, and commercial pound labels are not inferred from grammage alone.
- Check the stock specification and packaging count before ordering or shipping.
