Formula and methodology
Formula: Sheet caliper = measured stack height ÷ measured sheet count; target stack height = caliper × target sheet count; sheets per inch = 25.4 ÷ caliper in millimetres.
A single sheet can be difficult to measure reliably, so the page divides a measured stack by its sheet count and then projects a target stack. It keeps the measured stack and the projected stack separate: compression, curl, coatings, texture, air gaps, and binding pressure can make a real finished block differ from the ideal multiplication.

Assumptions and limits
- All sheets in the measured and target stacks have the same effective caliper.
- The stack measurement is taken with a stated method and without changing the pressure between the measured sheets.
- One inch is treated as 25.4 millimetres for the displayed conversion.
- The target count refers to physical sheets, not printed pages; duplex printing does not halve the physical sheet count.
- The stack is modeled as flat and uniform, with no cover boards, thread, glue, folds, or binding compression.
- Use the actual stock specification or a production measurement when a spine, package, or press setup requires a tolerance-controlled value.
- The result is a material estimate and not a manufacturing certification.
