Formula and methodology
Formula: For each orientation, per-layer count = floor(pallet length ÷ package length) × floor(pallet width ÷ package width). Choose the orientation with the larger count; total boxes = per-layer count × layers; footprint utilization = total packed footprint ÷ pallet footprint × 100.
This calculator checks the two simple axis-aligned orientations of identical rectangular packages on a rectangular pallet. It makes the winning orientation and unused footprint visible instead of assuming that the package dimensions are already aligned. It is a floor-layout estimate, not a complete pallet-engineering, load-strength, carrier, or warehouse-safety decision.

The 40×30 orientation fits 9 packages per layer; two layers hold 18 packages and use 90% of the pallet footprint.
Assumptions and limits
- The pallet and every package are rectangular, measured in compatible length units, and placed axis-aligned without overlap.
- Only the two unrotated-in-plane orientations are compared; mixed patterns, nesting, diagonal placement, and overhang are excluded.
- Every layer uses the same winning layout and the entered layer count is physically permitted by the package, pallet, rack, and handling system.
- The footprint calculation ignores pallet gaps, edge clearances, wrap, corner boards, straps, labels, and package deformation.
- The result does not determine maximum weight, center of gravity, stacking strength, forklift clearance, carrier rules, or export-packaging compliance.
- Confirm the layout against package tolerances, actual pallet dimensions, load limits, and handling procedures before shipping.
