Formula and methodology
Formula: Usable ambient-equivalent gas = cylinder water capacity × (starting gauge pressure − reserve gauge pressure) ÷ ambient absolute pressure; duration = usable gas ÷ stated flow rate.
This is a transparent ideal-gas planning estimate. It treats the cylinder water capacity as its internal volume, uses the pressure difference above the reserve, and expresses that gas at the entered ambient absolute pressure. It does not prescribe oxygen therapy, select a clinical flow, predict a regulator or device performance, or replace the cylinder label, supplier data, clinician instructions, and equipment checks.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.

The idealized usable gas is about 1,775.36 L at ambient pressure, giving about 887.68 minutes or 14.79 hours at 2 L/min; this is not a clinical recommendation.
Assumptions and limits
- Starting and reserve pressures are gauge pressures in bar, so their difference is the usable pressure interval; ambient pressure is absolute bar.
- The gas is treated as ideal and isothermal, with a fixed cylinder internal volume and no leakage or regulator loss.
- The entered flow rate is a continuous free-gas-equivalent consumption rate in litres per minute.
- The reserve is not consumed in the reported duration; it remains as the pressure interval below the reserve threshold.
- Temperature changes, altitude effects beyond the entered ambient pressure, pulse-dose devices, breathing demand, regulator limits, and cylinder residual behavior are not modeled.
- This estimate must not be used to set or change a person's oxygen treatment; follow the prescribing clinician, equipment instructions, and local safety procedures.
