Formula and methodology
Formula: OD = log₁₀(I₀/I); transmission fraction = I/I₀; attenuation = (1−I/I₀)×100%.
Optical density expresses the logarithmic reduction or increase between an incident and transmitted intensity. A negative value indicates transmission above the supplied incident reference.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Incident intensity — intensity units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Transmitted intensity — intensity units; minimum 1.0E-9; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Incident intensity | 1 |
| Transmitted intensity | 0.1 |
Optical density is 1.00, transmission is 10%, and attenuation is 90%.
Assumptions and limits
- The two intensity values use the same measurement basis and wavelength or spectral band.
- The intensities are positive and represent comparable incident and transmitted measurements.
- Scattering, fluorescence, path length, detector calibration, and a material-specific absorption coefficient are not inferred.
