Formula and methodology
Formula: Operating-asset turnover = revenue/average operating assets; asset intensity = average operating assets/revenue; days-equivalent = period days/turnover.
This ratio connects a period’s revenue with the average operating assets used to generate it. Turnover greater than one means the period’s revenue is larger than the asset base in the chosen currency units; the reciprocal shows asset units per revenue unit. The days-equivalent view is a mathematical translation, not a claim that every asset turns into cash on that schedule.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Revenue — currency units per period; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Average operating assets — currency units; minimum 0.01; maximum 1000000000000
- Days in reporting period — days; minimum 1; maximum 366
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Revenue | 500000 |
| Average operating assets | 200000 |
| Days in reporting period | 365 |
Turnover is 2.5 times, asset intensity is 0.4 currency units of assets per revenue unit, and the days-equivalent is 146 days.
Assumptions and limits
- Revenue and average operating assets use the same currency and reporting scope.
- Average operating assets are supplied for the period rather than inferred from one ending balance.
- Revenue may be zero, but asset intensity and days-equivalent outputs require positive revenue.
- The ratio does not choose which assets belong in the operating base.
- Seasonality, inflation, acquisitions, disposals, leases, and accounting policy can change comparability.
- Use the organization’s reporting definitions consistently when comparing periods or businesses.
