Formula and methodology
Formula: OPS = on-base percentage + slugging percentage.
OPS combines two previously calculated baseball rate statistics into one descriptive number. It intentionally accepts the two component ratios directly instead of repeating their raw box-score inputs.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- On-base percentage — ratio; Enter a ratio such as 0.350, not 35.; minimum 0; maximum 1
- Slugging percentage — ratio; Enter a ratio such as 0.500, not 50.; minimum 0; maximum 4
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| On-base percentage | 0.35 |
| Slugging percentage | 0.5 |
OPS is 0.850, or 85.00% on the displayed ratio-to-percent scale.
Assumptions and limits
- Both component values are ratios on the baseball scale, not percentages from 0 to 100.
- The components describe the same player, period, and statistical convention.
- OPS is descriptive and is not a projection, ranking, or valuation model.
