Formula and methodology
Formula: Numbers are split into million, thousand, and below-thousand groups. Each group is written with units, tens, and hundreds; parsing reverses those groups and validates that re-encoding produces the same canonical English wording.
The converter supports whole numbers from zero through 999,999,999 using a consistent English style without an inserted ‘and’. Strict round-trip validation rejects malformed or ambiguous word sequences instead of silently guessing.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Conversion direction — 2 choices
- Value to convert — Use a whole number from 0 to 999,999,999, or canonical English words such as two thousand twenty-six.
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Conversion direction | decimal-to-words |
| Value to convert | 2026 |
The decimal integer 2026 becomes two thousand twenty-six; parsing those words returns 2026.
Assumptions and limits
- The supported decimal domain is every whole number from zero through 999,999,999.
- The output uses modern US-style English number words and omits an inserted ‘and’.
- Hyphens between compound tens are accepted and normalized for comparison.
- Commas, decimal points, currency symbols, fractions, and negative signs are outside the input contract.
- The words-to-number direction accepts canonical wording only and rejects ambiguous sequences.
- The word ‘zero’ is used alone for zero and is not combined with another group.
- The scale words thousand and million must appear in descending order at most once each.
- The result is exact within the supported integer range and uses base-10 place value.
- English-only wording is intentional; translations and regional long-scale conventions need a localized contract.
- The converter does not format currencies, checks, legal documents, dates, or localized tax amounts.
