Formula and methodology
Formula: NPSH pressure margin = Psuction − Pvapor; NPSH head = (Psuction−Pvapor)/(ρg).
Available NPSH compares absolute suction pressure with the fluid's vapor pressure and expresses the margin both as pressure and as fluid head.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Absolute suction pressure — Pa; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Fluid vapor pressure — Pa; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Fluid density — kg/m³; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Gravitational acceleration — m/s²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Absolute suction pressure | 200000 |
| Fluid vapor pressure | 3000 |
| Fluid density | 1000 |
| Gravitational acceleration | 9.80665 |
The pressure margin is 197 kPa and the ideal head margin is about 20.1 m.
Assumptions and limits
- Suction and vapor pressures are absolute and refer to the same fluid location and condition.
- Density and gravity are treated as constant over the calculation.
- Velocity-head corrections, suction-line friction, pump manufacturer requirements, transient operation, and cavitation approval are not modeled.
