Formula and methodology
Formula: N = mg cos(θ) − F⊥, where positive F⊥ points away from the surface; contact is retained only when N > 0.
The normal force is the component of the support reaction perpendicular to the contact surface. On a gravity-only incline it is mg cos θ; an additional force away from the surface lowers it, while a force toward the surface is represented by a negative entered value.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Object mass — kg; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Incline angle — °; minimum 0; maximum 89.9
- Force directed away from surface — N; minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Object mass | 20 |
| Incline angle | 30 |
| Force directed away from surface | 0 |
169.74 N normal force
Assumptions and limits
- The object remains in contact with one planar surface and has no acceleration normal to that surface.
- The incline angle is measured from horizontal and gravity is fixed at 9.80665 m/s².
- The result does not determine friction, tipping, deformation, multi-contact load sharing, or structural capacity.
