Formula and methodology
Formula: Noise figure NF(dB) = SNRin(dB) − SNRout(dB); noise factor F = 10^(NF/10).
Noise figure measures the degradation of signal-to-noise ratio introduced by a device or signal chain, while noise factor expresses the same comparison on a linear scale.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Input signal-to-noise ratio — dB; minimum -1000; maximum 1000
- Output signal-to-noise ratio — dB; minimum -1000; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Input signal-to-noise ratio | 20 |
| Output signal-to-noise ratio | 15 |
Noise figure is 5 dB and the noise factor is about 3.16.
Assumptions and limits
- Input and output SNR values describe the same signal path and bandwidth convention.
- The result is a measured or supplied performance comparison, not a prediction of a particular component.
- Impedance mismatch, cascaded Friis terms, bandwidth changes, and measurement uncertainty are not inferred.
