Formula and methodology
Formula: Gross debt = short-term debt + long-term debt + included lease liabilities; liquid assets = cash and equivalents + selected short-term investments; net debt = gross debt − liquid assets; net-debt share = net debt ÷ gross debt × 100.
The calculator makes the debt and liquidity boundary editable instead of hiding classification rules. Lease liabilities and short-term investments are included only when the visitor enters them in the explicitly named fields. A negative result is reported as net cash relative to this scenario.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Short-term debt — currency units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Long-term debt — currency units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Lease liabilities included in scenario — currency units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Cash and cash equivalents — currency units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Short-term investments treated as liquid — currency units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Short-term debt | 200000 |
| Long-term debt | 800000 |
| Lease liabilities included in scenario | 100000 |
| Cash and cash equivalents | 300000 |
| Short-term investments treated as liquid | 100000 |
Gross debt = 1,100,000; liquid assets = 400,000; net debt = 700,000 currency units; net-debt share = 63.64%.
Assumptions and limits
- All monetary inputs use the same reporting date, currency, and consolidation boundary.
- Lease liabilities are included only as an entered scenario amount and are not classified under a jurisdiction-specific accounting rule.
- Short-term investments are treated as liquid only because the visitor places them in that field.
- Net-debt share is undefined when gross debt is zero and is shown as text in that case.
- The result does not replace a company’s reported net-debt definition or covenant calculation.
- Interest rates, maturities, restricted cash, refinancing risk, taxes, and valuation multiples are not modeled.
