Formula and methodology
Formula: t_high = 0.693(R1+R2)C; t_low = 0.693R2C; f = 1/[0.693(R1+2R2)C] ≈ 1.44/[(R1+2R2)C]; duty = (R1+R2)/(R1+2R2).
The standard NE555 astable network repeatedly charges and discharges its timing capacitor through two resistors. This first-order timing result makes the RC contribution visible before component tolerance and output-loading effects are considered.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Timing resistor R1 — Ω; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Timing resistor R2 — Ω; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Timing capacitor — µF; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Timing resistor R1 | 10000 |
| Timing resistor R2 | 47000 |
| Timing capacitor | 0.01 |
Frequency ≈ 1,387.50 Hz; duty cycle ≈ 54.81%; high time ≈ 0.395 ms and low time ≈ 0.326 ms.
Assumptions and limits
- The standard astable connection is used with positive resistor and capacitor values.
- The 0.693 timing approximation and 1.44 frequency approximation describe the ideal textbook circuit.
- Supply voltage, leakage, threshold tolerances, output rise/fall time, load, and exact IC variant are not modeled.
