Formula and methodology
Formula: Remaining words = max(0, target − current); required daily pace = remaining words ÷ days remaining; projected final count = current words + daily pace × days remaining; progress = current ÷ target × 100.
The calculator works for a personal writing goal of any size. Its default reflects the familiar 50,000-word, 30-day challenge, but the visitor controls the target, current count, days, and pace; it does not judge the quality, genre, language, or publishability of the writing.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Target word count — words; minimum 1; maximum 1000000000
- Current word count — words; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Writing days remaining — days; minimum 1; maximum 1000000
- Planned words per day — words/day; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Target word count | 50000 |
| Current word count | 0 |
| Writing days remaining | 30 |
| Planned words per day | 1667 |
The remaining average is 1,666.67 words per day; a 1,667-word daily pace projects 50,010 words after 30 days.
Assumptions and limits
- The target and current count are word counts under the visitor’s chosen counting method.
- Days remaining are available writing days, not necessarily consecutive calendar days.
- The required pace is an average; it does not schedule rest days or account for editing.
- A current count above the target is allowed and reports zero remaining words.
- The projection assumes the planned daily pace remains constant through the entered days.
- The tool is a planning aid and makes no promise about finishing, quality, publication, or income.
