Formula and methodology
Formula: Every pitch class is replaced by (original pitch class + semitone shift) modulo 12; interval distances are preserved.
Transposition moves every note by the same interval. This note-sequence tool deliberately works with pitch classes and a consistent output spelling; it does not attempt to rewrite a full score or choose a new key signature.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Note sequence — Enter notes separated by spaces or commas, such as C D E F G.
- Transpose by — semitones; minimum -48; maximum 48
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Note sequence | C D E F G |
| Transpose by | 2 |
D E F♯ G A
Assumptions and limits
- The sequence contains note names from C through B with optional sharps or flats and no octave numbers.
- All notes receive the same integer semitone shift, preserving ordered interval content modulo octaves.
- Rhythm, register, notation spelling, key signatures, and voice-leading are not modeled.
