Formula and methodology
Formula: Each scale note = root pitch class + the selected interval pattern modulo 12; the pattern determines scale type.
A scale is represented here as a root pitch class plus an interval pattern. The output keeps the order of the pattern and names pitch classes with a consistent sharp-oriented spelling so the result is easy to copy into a practice or production note.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Root note — 12 choices
- Scale type — 8 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Root note | C |
| Scale type | major |
C, D, E, F, G, A, B
Assumptions and limits
- The scale patterns are equal-tempered pitch-class patterns and do not choose an enharmonic spelling for staff notation.
- The natural, harmonic, and melodic minor patterns are treated as ascending pitch collections.
- Modes, microtonal scales, tuning systems, and context-dependent theoretical spellings are outside this compact builder.
