Formula and methodology
Formula: ordered semitones = (12 × upper octave + upper pitch class) − (12 × lower octave + lower pitch class); interval class = min(mod 12, 12 − mod 12); frequency ratio = 2^(semitones/12).
The calculator treats an octave-numbered note as a pitch and reports both direction-sensitive semitones and the smallest pitch-class distance. The frequency ratio uses equal temperament, where twelve equal semitones span one octave.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- First note — 12 choices
- First octave — minimum -1; maximum 9
- Second note — 12 choices
- Second octave — minimum -1; maximum 9
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| First note | C |
| First octave | 4 |
| Second note | G |
| Second octave | 4 |
7 ordered semitones, interval class 5, frequency ratio about 1.4983
Assumptions and limits
- Note names use twelve-tone equal-tempered pitch classes with the displayed octave numbers.
- The reported frequency ratio is the ideal equal-tempered ratio, not a measured instrument frequency.
- Spelling-specific interval quality such as major versus diminished is not inferred from pitch class alone.
