Formula and methodology
Formula: beats = bars × beats per bar; seconds = 60 × beats / BPM; minutes = seconds / 60.
A metronome tempo expressed in beats per minute gives the duration of one beat. Multiplying by the beats in the selected number of bars turns meter and bar count into an estimated passage length.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Tempo — BPM; minimum 1; maximum 1000
- Beats per bar — beats; minimum 1; maximum 32
- Number of bars — bars; minimum 0; maximum 10000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Tempo | 120 |
| Beats per bar | 4 |
| Number of bars | 32 |
128 beats, or 64 seconds (1.0667 minutes)
Assumptions and limits
- The entered BPM refers to the beat represented by one beat in the selected meter.
- Every bar contains the same entered number of beats and the tempo remains constant.
- Tempo changes, pickup measures, fermatas, rubato, swing interpretation, and performance pauses are not modeled.
