Formula and methodology
Formula: Effective area per hour = mower width in feet × speed in feet per hour × efficiency; productive hours = lawn area ÷ effective area per hour; total visit hours = productive hours + setup minutes ÷ 60; visit cost = total visit hours × (labor + equipment + fuel/maintenance rate); seasonal cost = visit cost × visits.
This is a transparent operating-cost scenario. Area, cutting width, travel speed, and field efficiency determine productive time; the visitor supplies labor, equipment, fuel, maintenance, setup, and visit assumptions in the currency they use. It does not publish a universal regional service price.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Lawn area — ft²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Mower cutting width — in; minimum 1; maximum 1000
- Average mowing speed — mph; minimum 0.01; maximum 50
- Field efficiency after turns and obstacles — %; minimum 1; maximum 100
- Labor rate — currency/hour; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Equipment ownership rate — currency/hour; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Fuel and maintenance rate — currency/hour; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Setup and cleanup time per visit — minutes; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Planned visits — minimum 1; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Lawn area | 8000 |
| Mower cutting width | 24 |
| Average mowing speed | 2.5 |
| Field efficiency after turns and obstacles | 70 |
| Labor rate | 25 |
| Equipment ownership rate | 8 |
| Fuel and maintenance rate | 5 |
| Setup and cleanup time per visit | 10 |
| Planned visits | 20 |
The scenario takes about 0.43 productive hours, 0.60 total hours per visit, costs about 22.78 currency units per visit, and about 455.69 currency units for 20 visits.
Assumptions and limits
- Lawn area is entered in square feet and is measured or estimated from the actual turf area, not the entire property unless that is intended.
- Mower width and speed describe the average effective pass, while field efficiency accounts for turns, obstacles, overlap, and interruptions.
- Labor, equipment, and fuel/maintenance values are user-entered rates in a consistent currency per hour.
- Setup and cleanup minutes are added to every visit and charged at the combined hourly rate.
- The model does not include taxes, travel distance, disposal, edging, trimming, fertilizing, wet grass, hills, or contract minimums unless included in the entered rates.
- A quote should use the service provider's measured productivity and local costs rather than treating this scenario as a market price.
