Formula and methodology
Formula: Q=P·tan(arccos(PF)); capacitor reactive power Qc=Qinitial−Qtarget; for a single-phase shunt capacitor C=Qc/(2πfV²).
Power-factor correction does not create more mechanical motor output; it reduces the reactive current supplied by the source for the same entered real power. This focused single-phase estimate converts the initial and target power factors into reactive-power magnitudes, takes their difference, and then uses the RMS capacitor relation Qc=ωCV² to report farads and microfarads.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Real motor power — W; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- RMS supply voltage — V; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Supply frequency — Hz; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Existing power factor — PF; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1
- Target power factor — PF; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Real motor power | 2000 |
| RMS supply voltage | 230 |
| Supply frequency | 50 |
| Existing power factor | 0.75 |
| Target power factor | 0.95 |
The load changes from about 1.764 kVAR to 0.657 kVAR, so the ideal correction is about 1.106 kVAR and 66.58 µF at 230 V, 50 Hz.
Assumptions and limits
- The load is represented by constant real power and lagging power-factor magnitudes; phase direction is not separately entered.
- The capacitor is a single-phase shunt element connected at the entered RMS voltage and frequency.
- The target power factor must be greater than the existing value so the returned capacitance is a positive correction requirement.
- Harmonics, motor starting, voltage tolerance, capacitor switching, resonance, detuning, unbalance, protection, and local electrical-code requirements are not modeled.
- This is a planning estimate, not a component rating or installation instruction; qualified electrical review is required before hardware work.
