Formula and methodology
Formula: M = mRT/(PV), using R = 8.314462618 kPa·L/(mol·K); gas density = m/V.
The ideal-gas equation can be rearranged to recover molar mass from a weighed sample and its measured state. The result is a model-based estimate and becomes less reliable when pressure is high, temperature is low, or the gas departs materially from ideal behavior.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Gas sample mass — g; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Absolute pressure — kPa; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Gas volume — L; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Absolute temperature — K; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Gas sample mass | 28 |
| Absolute pressure | 101.325 |
| Gas volume | 22.414 |
| Absolute temperature | 273.15 |
Estimated molar mass ≈ 28.00 g/mol and gas density ≈ 1.249 g/L.
Assumptions and limits
- Pressure is absolute, volume is in litres, temperature is in kelvin, and mass is in grams.
- The sample is sufficiently close to ideal-gas behavior for PV = nRT to be useful.
- Water vapor, buoyancy corrections, compressibility factor, leaks, and weighing or volume uncertainty are not inferred.
