Formula and methodology
Formula: m = A_m/A_c; envelope maximum/minimum = A_c ± A_m; each sideband amplitude = mA_c/2; total AM power = P_c(1 + m²/2).
For a single sinusoidal message, the amplitude ratio describes how strongly the carrier envelope varies. The result exposes the over-modulation boundary and the ideal carrier/sideband power relationship without modeling a transmitter or antenna.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Carrier amplitude — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Message amplitude — minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Unmodulated carrier power — W; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Carrier amplitude | 10 |
| Message amplitude | 4 |
| Unmodulated carrier power | 100 |
Modulation index = 0.4 (40%); envelope = 6 to 14; total AM power = 108 W.
Assumptions and limits
- The signal is conventional single-tone AM with a nonzero carrier and sinusoidal message amplitude.
- Carrier power is the unmodulated average carrier power and the two sidebands are ideal and symmetric.
- Impedance, bandwidth limits, nonlinear distortion, transmitter efficiency, and regulatory requirements are not modeled.
