Formula and methodology
Formula: Use x=(R+s cos(t/2))cos(t), y=(R+s cos(t/2))sin(t), z=s sin(t/2), with s from −w to w; integrate the published area element over t and s, and the edge speed over one complete 4π boundary traversal.
A Möbius strip is not adequately described by the flat rectangle approximation when the band is wide. This tool numerically integrates the standard parametrization's surface element and follows one boundary edge through the full 4π parameter interval, while also reporting the centerline circumference for scale.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Centerline radius — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Half-width of strip — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Centerline radius | 1 |
| Half-width of strip | 0.1 |
The strip has centerline circumference 6.28319 m; the integrated surface area and one continuous boundary length are reported from the parametrized model.
Assumptions and limits
- The strip has one half-twist, a circular centerline of radius R, and constant half-width w.
- The non-self-intersecting model requires the half-width to be smaller than the centerline radius.
- Surface area and edge length use deterministic composite Simpson integration of the stated parametrization; material thickness, stretching, overlap, and manufacturing tolerances are not modeled.
