Formula and methodology
Formula: MLVSS concentration = MLSS × volatile fraction ÷ 100; inert suspended-solids concentration = MLSS − MLVSS; MLVSS mass in kilograms = MLVSS in mg/L × basin volume in m³ × 0.001.
MLSS is the total suspended-solids concentration in mixed liquor; MLVSS is the volatile portion used as a biological-solids indicator in wastewater process control. The calculator keeps concentration and basin mass separate and does not infer process performance, sludge age, oxygen demand, or compliance.

At 3,000 mg/L MLSS and 75% volatile fraction, MLVSS is 2,250 mg/L, inert solids are 750 mg/L, and the basin contains about 225 kg of MLVSS.
Assumptions and limits
- MLSS is entered as a concentration in milligrams per litre and the volatile fraction is a percentage of that concentration.
- The basin volume is treated as a uniform mixed volume in cubic metres.
- The conversion 1 mg/L × 1 m³ = 0.001 kg is used for the mass result.
- The volatile fraction is measured or supplied by the user and is not guessed from a universal 70–80% rule.
- The result does not replace laboratory solids testing, sampling plans, process-control calculations, or permit requirements.
- Use the plant's operating definitions and qualified wastewater engineering review for decisions about treatment performance.
