Formula and methodology
Formula: T_mix = (ṁ₁c₁T₁ + ṁ₂c₂T₂)/(ṁ₁c₁ + ṁ₂), using heat-capacity flow as the weighting factor.
Two air streams do not necessarily contribute equally just because their volume or mass flows look similar. This page makes each stream's mass flow and specific heat visible and uses an adiabatic energy balance.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Stream 1 mass flow — kg/s; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Stream 1 temperature — °C; minimum -273.149; maximum 10000000
- Stream 1 specific heat — J/(kg·K); minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000000
- Stream 2 mass flow — kg/s; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Stream 2 temperature — °C; minimum -273.149; maximum 10000000
- Stream 2 specific heat — J/(kg·K); minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Stream 1 mass flow | 1 |
| Stream 1 temperature | 10 |
| Stream 1 specific heat | 1005 |
| Stream 2 mass flow | 0.5 |
| Stream 2 temperature | 30 |
| Stream 2 specific heat | 1005 |
A 1 kg/s stream at 10 °C mixed with 0.5 kg/s at 30 °C gives 16.6667 °C under the ideal adiabatic model.
Assumptions and limits
- The two streams mix completely at steady state with no external heat loss or gain.
- Each stream has a constant supplied specific heat over the temperature interval.
- Mass-flow and temperature units are compatible and temperature differences use kelvin-sized increments.
- Humidity, phase change, pressure drop, stratification, duct losses, and fan heat are not modeled.
