Formula and methodology
Formula: Equal miter cut = joint angle/2; complementary reference from a square cut = 90° − miter cut.
For two matching pieces meeting symmetrically, the included joint angle is divided equally between the two cuts. The page keeps the cut angle and its complementary reference distinct so a visitor does not confuse the joint angle with the saw setting.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Included joint angle — °; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 179.999999
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Included joint angle | 90 |
A 90° included joint uses two 45° miter cuts; the complementary reference is also 45°.
Assumptions and limits
- The joint is a symmetric two-piece flat-stock joint and both pieces use equal cuts.
- The included angle is measured between the finished faces and lies between 0° and 180°.
- The result is an angle calculation; stock thickness, kerf, bevel orientation, compound cuts, and fit-up tolerance are not modeled.
- A real saw setup still requires the machine's own scale, blade orientation, and a test cut.
